What this booklet covers
This booklet is designed for patients undergoing diagnostic imaging. It explains:
- Before the test: Preparation steps, clothing and jewelry, when to fast or stop medications (if required).
- During the test: What to expect during X-ray, CT, MRI and ultrasound; typical duration and positions.
- Safety: Radiation safety for X-rays/CT, MRI safety considerations (implants, metal), pregnancy guidance.
- After the test: How you receive your report, who to contact with questions, follow-up recommendations.
- Preparing children: Tips for parents to make imaging less stressful for children.
Before your X‑ray or imaging appointment
Arrive 10–15 minutes early and bring any referral documents, prior imaging or reports if available. Wear loose, comfortable clothing and remove metal objects (jewellery, belts). Notify staff if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant.
Safety and comfort
Radiology teams use the lowest radiation dose necessary for diagnosis. For MRI, you will be screened for implants and metallic objects. If you experience anxiety or claustrophobia, let staff know — we can often provide strategies or support.
Receiving results
Reports are prepared by a consultant radiologist and shared with the referring clinician. The usual turnaround time is noted in the report; for urgent requests please ask the referring clinician to mark the request as urgent or contact the imaging service directly.
Need interpreter?
Inform reception before your appointment if you need language assistance.
Accessibility
If you have mobility needs or require assistance, contact the clinic ahead of your visit so we can help.
